Why Your Growing Company Needs a Mobile Based Access Control System

We hope your business achieves more growth than you ever dreamed possible. At the same time, we hope you don’t experience too many “growing pains”—like having to spend an arm and a leg on a new access control system less than a year after purchasing the original one. But even if you’re growing by five or more employees a year, you’ll need to upgrade your access control system sooner or later.

When you do upgrade, a smartphone-based access control system could be perfect for your needs, while saving you a lot of money. Here are three reasons why it makes sense for growing businesses to use this kind of access control solution:

1. Save Money When Growth Requires a New Office Space

Contrary to popular misconceptions, the installation/setup costs for a mobile access control solution are cheaper than installation for a traditional server-based access control solution. Plus, mobile access control systems means you don’t have to buy key cards and fobs, which can save money.

It wasn’t always like this. We used to have only two options for access control: (1) a traditional server-based access control solution with prox keycards or (2) an old-school cylinder lock and brass key system. While legacy keycard systems provide more functionality than their analog counterparts, they use outdated technologies like the Wiegand protocol that is insecure and vulnerable to hacking. Plus, all the hardware associated with legacy systems can be expensive.

Fortunately, we now have a third option: mobile access control systems. These systems use cloud-based and smartphone-based access control—and they’re less expensive to install than the hard-wired alternatives.

Who wouldn’t want a better, more technologically advanced access control solution for less money than the alternative? Openpath access control systems help you bypass the costs associated with buying, setting up and configuring servers, networks and other components, and can save you anywhere from 20 to 50 percent compared to those who use legacy systems.

2. Design and Setup are Faster and Easier

Openpath’s smartphone access solutions save time and prevent headaches when moving offices. For one, mobile access solutions let you add the convenience of smartphone credentials seamlessly, whether you’re implementing a new system or integrating with an existing one. Secondly, because Openpath’s patented access technology is easy to install, you’ll be up and running with a high-tech access control solution in no time.

3. Mobile Access is More Secure

To understand why mobile access control is more secure, let’s compare a traditional keycard solution to a mobile access solution by looking at the problem of people passing around, sharing, and stealing keycards:

Example A: The Keycard Sharing Problem

Lisa forgets to bring her keycard to work, but reception lets her into the office. Later, Lisa offers to get takeout for her boss, and says, “Oh, but I forgot my keycard!” The boss loans her the universal access card that only managers have, not thinking much of it. After lunch, Lisa forgets to return the keycard. No problem. The boss grabs one of the spare cards from his unlocked desk drawer.

If this happened on a weekly basis, can you see how messy a keycard system can get? The wrong people have access to the wrong places. And, with so many keycards floating around, it’s easy for one to get stolen and end up in dishonest hands.

Example B: The Smartphone-Based Access Solution

In this example, Lisa forgets her smartphone. Not likely, but let’s imagine she does. Her boss has a couple of options: he (or the receptionist) can easily remote unlock the door for Lisa, or he can set up a temporary guest access link that she can use with her tablet or laptop.

And what if someone steals the boss’s smartphone with universal access? If it’s an Openpath access control solution, our systems let you harness the smartphone’s facial recognition and fingerprint scanning tech for your highest security areas. So, if somebody tries to use the boss’s smartphone to get into a high-security area, the phone asks for a fingerprint scan and denies access.

There are other reasons why smartphones are better, such as the fact that you can’t copy a smartphone, but for just $11, you can duplicate most keycards and key fobs. Long story short: It’s pretty clear why smartphone-based access control is more secure.
